Leonard’s inflammation in his surgically repaired knee kept him out of the game throughout the last eight games of the regular season and Sunday’s Game 1 triumph over Dallas.
Leonard hadn’t performed since March 31. Coach Ty Lue stated that although Leonard had taken all the required precautions for a safe return—including participating in Monday’s practice—he would still be in contact during Game 2.
Lawrence Frank, the head of basketball operations for the Clippers, had previously called Leonard’s inflammation “unpredictable” and “stubborn.”

Leonard had been sidelined for the final eight games of the regular season and Sunday’s Game 1 victory over Dallas due to inflammation in his surgically repaired knee.
The last time Leonard played was on March 31. Although he participated in practices, including Monday’s session, Coach Ty Lue confirmed that Leonard had gone through all the necessary steps for a safe return but would face contact in Game 2.
Clippers’ president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank had previously described Leonard’s inflammation as “unpredictable” and “stubborn.”
Leonard’s return brings back a key player who averaged 32.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 4.8 assists against Dallas in the playoffs. He played in 68 games this season, his most since the 2016-17 season with the Spurs.
