The central government has taken a firm stance against the proliferation of obscene and vulgar content on various OTT platforms, leading to the ban of 18 such platforms. Despite repeated warnings, these platforms continued to host content deemed inappropriate, including pornographic material. Consequently, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has blocked access to these platforms, along with associated websites, apps, and social media accounts, in India.

The ban comes in light of violations of Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. The Ministry emphasized that the content hosted on these platforms portrayed women in a demeaning manner and included nudity, sexual acts, and sexual innuendos without any societal relevance.

Highlighting the scale of these banned apps, the government revealed that one app had over 1 crore downloads, while two others had over 50 lakh downloads on the Google Play Store. Additionally, the associated social media handles collectively had a followership of over 32 lakh users.
